Interview with Sketch Artist Todd Groesbeck

313 - Interview with Todd Groesbeck

This week John is talking with sketch artist Todd Groesbeck about his approach and lifelong obsession with drawing and sketching.

Todd earned his BFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and currently works with a branch of the military. Listen in as they discuss some of the unique experiences Todd has had in and continues to explore.

“Drawing is Thinking” is a mantra that really resonates with Todd and has for years. He’s not a writer but he does express his ideas through line and value.

Todd’s encouragement is to create challenges for yourself and to draw quickly. Don’t think of it as too precious.

He also says “if you only draw when you’re going to create some piece to show somebody, then you’re not really ever warmed up. It’s too stiff, and maybe the drawing becomes too polite.”

Interview with Susan Lyon

Show Notes:

Interview with Susan Lyon

303 - Interview with Susan Lyon

This week John is talking with artist Susan Lyon. Her initial interest in art was sparked by a PBS television show on Georgia O'Keefe, that inspired her to take weekend art classes.

She studied art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and was an active participant in Chicago's Palette and Chisel Club. It is there she first began exhibiting and selling her work.

Susan draws inspiration from painters of the Guilded age such as John Singer Sargent.

Susan has a unique style of painting and uses contrasting values to create a greater sense of drama.  She says that a color photograph will lie to you. Listen to her explain how to simplify what you see.
