Capturing a Child’s Smile
Capturing a Child’s Smile is a 4-hour pre-recorded, live Zoom workshop focused on drawing expression and teeth with confidence in colored pencil.
Using a reference photo of Oaklyn smiling with visible teeth, this demonstration explores how structure, value relationships, and subtle color shifts work together to create a believable and natural smile.
Capturing a Child’s Smile
8 × 8 inch size on light gray Pastelmat and using a limited palette, this workshop emphasizes simplification, restraint, and expression.
The session was taught live on Zoom and recorded for students to review later and work along at their own pace.
Rather than treating teeth as a single “white” shape, we’ll look at how they often fall into warmer, yellow-leaning whites and cooler, gray-leaning whites.
You’ll see how introducing gentle warm and cool grays allows the teeth to still read as white while maintaining form and depth.
We’ll also address how to show the cylindrical nature of teeth in the mouth without exaggeration or unnecessary detail.
Enjoy!
