Interview with Angie Sotiropoulos

Show Notes:

Season 4

357 - Interview with Angie Sotiropoulos

In this podcast episode, John and Barb talk with Angie Sotiropoulos. Angie is also Barb’s older sister. :)

Angie is the talented artist and creator behind Dragonfly Book Press. She dives into her creative journey and explains her passion for crafting sketchbooks and notebooks.

You'll be intrigued to hear about the specific paper she selects for her books. It's a game-changer for colored pencil and watercolor artists, offering the perfect surface for their creations.

And here's a fun fact: she uses the very same paper that artists prefer and use for their larger, more serious pieces!  😊

Angie's inspiration came from a desire to carry different types of paper without losing or damaging them. She particularly wanted to use her favorite 100% cotton watercolor paper in a more practical, bound format. This approach allowed her to organize her sketches in one place chronologically.

Her friends noticed and soon began requesting custom sketchbooks, giving Angie the perfect opportunity to hone her bookbinding skills.

When the 2020 pandemic hit, Angie found herself with more time to go deeper into bookbinding. This period of exploration led to the birth of a new business idea. Choosing the dragonfly as her company emblem was symbolic of the adaptability, transformation, and change she was experiencing.

Angie's work is more than just about creating physical objects; it's about encouraging a slower, more mindful approach to creativity.

Shifting Your Perspective

Show Notes:

Season 4

356 - Shifting Your Perspective

In this podcast episode, John and Barb talk about the topic of creative inspiration, advocating for the use of multiple artistic mediums beyond colored pencils to keep the artistic journey engaging.

They note that experimenting with different mediums can sharpen skills like understanding color theory and value. Barb reveals she's taking a one-year intensive art course to hone techniques she felt were lacking.

They also discuss the importance of making your art public and taking calculated risks. Both hosts agree that entering art shows can yield invaluable feedback and unexpected rewards.

They touch on the role of mentorship in an artist's development, saying that mentors can offer a focused perspective on your strengths and weaknesses, while also setting goals and providing accountability.

Group coaching sessions are also spotlighted as they can broaden an artist's view by exposing them to different perspectives and queries they may not have considered.

The bottom line is external perspectives, whether from peers, mentors, or art shows, can certainly help artists grow and improve their craft!

Interview with Paco Martin

Show Notes:

Season 4

355 - Interview with Paco Martin

In this podcast episode, John speaks with colored pencil artist and instructor Paco Martin. Paco shares how he came to colored pencils after first using graphite and pastels.

Paco embarked on his artistic journey with self-taught techniques but soon realized the need for formal training. He initially explored oils and was also drawn to pastels.

However, he found his true artistic voice in colored pencil. It's a medium he feels allows him the greatest expression and realism.

Paco's artistic style is meticulous, influenced by his strong background in Mathematics. He experiments with shapes, textures, volumes, and compositions, often incorporating geometric designs and the golden ratio into his work.

Over the years, Paco has built an international network of artist friends, learning from them while also contributing to the community. One of his major goals is to popularize colored pencil art in Spain, where he feels the medium hasn't received the recognition it deserves.

Paco has earned significant awards and recognition from a variety of esteemed art associations. These include the Australian Society of Coloured Pencil Artists (AUSCPA), the Pencil Art Society, the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA), the UK Colored Pencil Society (UKCPS), the Colored Pencil Artists and Lovers (CPCAU), and the International Guild of Realism (IGOR).

He continuously challenges himself to capture the nuanced beauty of everyday life, believing that he still has much to achieve as an artist.

Interview with Author Jeff Goins - Real Artists Don't Starve

Show Notes:

Season 3

352 - Interview with Author Jeff Goins - Real Artists Don't Starve

In this podcast episode, John and Barb speak with best-selling author and keynote speaker Jeff Goins about his book "Real Artists Don't Starve." Goins shares insightful strategies for modern artists, delving into pricing, social media, and techniques to practice one's art out loud.

The conversation also examines artistic patronage, tracing its roots back to the historical master artists throughout time.

Goins notes that many artists shared similar stories: feeling like they had to choose between chasing their artistic pursuits or making a secure income.

But do you have to choose today?

Goins researched and analyzed some of the world's most successful creative artists, like Michangelo, to figure out how they earned money while maintaining their creative "integrity."

The book contains timeless strategies that could help today's artists successfully navigate their careers without sacrificing their passion or creativity.

Practicing one's art out loud involves sharing work publicly and engaging with criticism constructively to grow and create better art over time.
