041 Images On Your Website

Topic:  Images On Your Site

Compression

By doing the compression yourself you can take control of quality and aspect ratio of your images, instead of letting your site’s content management system, or a social media platform decide for you.

There are two types of compression, generally, when talking about image files:

  1. Lossy(jpeg) - Where you do lose some of the file fidelity and it doesn’t come back.  But it is supposed to be getting rid of unnecessary information that didn’t really matter.

  2. Lossless - This compression does not lose any fidelity.  These file types are tiff, vector files or native application files, raw files, and zip compressions, to name a few.

Most of the time, you are better off converting your image files to jpeg (or jpg) format because of the general acceptance of this image file type.  To the naked eye you are not going to see any degradation in the quality of an image.

There are arguments on both sides regarding what file size you should use on your own site or social media sites.  If you go with a larger file size then you’re going to allow people to really see and experience your image and visualize your art in a better way.  On the other hand you may invite someone to copy your image and use it elsewhere as their own or without your permission.

By making your images too small you may inadvertently be turning away an audience that would otherwise be interested in purchasing your work.

Social media sites will often compress to a size of 2048 px on one side or smaller.  Many sites will decrease it to a much smaller size.  You could go with something around 800 px size and still be able to show your image quite well.  If you compress it yourself, then you should be able to take control and set the compression and size and aspect ratio to what you want.

Current versions of Adobe Photoshop (the creative cloud subscription) is calling the compression “quality” for jpg now in the area where you select file/save as (the way we’re used to saving files).  In this area you have the option of saving jpeg quality scale option from 1 to 12.

This setting is a little misleading.  The word quality is actually referring to the algorithm that the program will use to compress your file and it is an old compression.  It makes files bigger than they need to be and doesn’t make them look any better.

I would use the “save for web” legacy option.  It takes advantage of the newest algorithm from Adobe and you can set the percentage in this option to 80%.  The “export as” option is very new but has been changed by Adobe a few times.  I am guessing that sometime in the future it will probably be a good option.

If you do decide to use File/Save As option then I would set the “quality” option to 10.  That 10 corresponds to about 80%.  If you set your images to 80% quality then you will still allow all the quality and fidelity to be seen and looks no different than if you had used 100%, even if you print the image.  It will look fine to your eyes and everyone else's.  Remember that even at “100%” it is compressing the file down.

If you are using an image file on your homepage that will be downloaded a lot, then I would try and keep that file very small because that affects your page load time, which may in turn affect the bounce rate.  And all those things will affect the rank of your site in a search.

What about thieves?

My philosophy is that you are going to always have thieves and immoral people who will steal your images regardless of what you do.  If someone is going to steal, then impeding that via a watermark or small image will not prevent them from doing so.  A thief will always exercise their job description.

Although, there isn’t anything wrong with having some safeguards in place to ward off the thief but when it comes to sacrificing image quality that is where I would draw the line.  We cannot allow a criminal to make us show something less than par on our sites.

040 Starting Your Website Part 2

Topic:  Starting Your Website part 2

This week John and Lisa continue the discussion of starting your own website.

Here are some of the topics discussed:

  • Colors - Colors on your site should be subdued and muted.  Look at Lisa’s site: lachri.com  (she does push the envelope just a little)

  • Fonts - Some of the fonts that I like right now are: Trebuchet, Merriweather, Amaranth, Promixa Nova.

Read the documentation from Apple on their new font:  https://developer.apple.com/fonts/

What is a plugin?

A plugin is a small feature set program that performs a specific function on your site.  For example, you may have a plugin for a form, and a different plugin for a gallery display of your images.

Be sure and test each each plugin and give it about a week before adding another.

How many fonts should you use and will too many create a performance hit?

Try and keep the number to somewhere around 10.  Keep a log of the plugins and what each is doing on your site.

Is mobile important?

Google has announced that they will factor in a sites mobile experience when they consider search rank.

About half of your visitors are using mobile to visit your site, so we want to create a good experience for them as well.

039 Starting Your Website Part 1

Topic:  Starting Your Website part 1

This week John and Lisa talk about starting your own website.

Here are some of the topics and questions we discuss:

Why you still need a website, instead of just a social media page.

You maintain control of your online presence.
You can create and maintain your own gallery online.
You can create a slogan or by-line to provide more information about you and your work.

Is it worth doing a website?  Yes, if you know why you are doing.
You have to market the platform and your brand  (build it and they MIGHT come, if you work at it)

What should your first steps be: Choose a host, and url

Some free site options:
Weebly
Wix
Fine Art America (in 2015 they came up with a virtual shopping cart)
DeviantArt

Some paid site options:
Squarespace - Not only a content management system (CMS), but your host server and you can customize the code as well.  *This is the platform that John is currently using for sharpenedartist.com
Faso.com (Fine Art Studio Online)
WordPress - A content management system (CMS), but also very easy to use and get started with.

What to do now:

Choose a platform and a host

Choose a theme if you’re going with wordpress (free or paid)
Choose a color scheme (make sure it’s not distracting, go for muted, subdued colors)
Design your home page and site (use a flow chart for writing out the navigation experience)

038 Deep Dive Discussion Of Inktense

Topic:  Deep Dive Into Derwent’s Inktense Pencils

What are Inktense Pencils?

This week Lisa and I talk about Derwent’s Inktense pencils.

They are not really watercolor, although the way you use them can be very similar.  You can also opt to use them dry and without any water at all.  They lay down very smoothly even without applying water.

They are permanent when dry.   They can be painted on lots of different surfaces.

Blocks vs Pencils

  • blocks can be applied directly to the paper, but will have a grainy look. You can also use a paint brush and water to make your own ink mixture and apply the ink directly to the paper for a much smoother look.

  • The blocks are a bit more versatile because you can so easily make your ink mixtures with them. You can then apply that ink with a tiny brush for fine detail or a large brush for larger areas.

  • Pencils can sharpen to a fine point for detail, then add water if desired to blend out directly on the paper.

  • The blocks and the pencils work very well together.

Tips for working with Inktense:

  • When wet, the colors may be very different than when dry. Especially the white. When dry the white from the Inktense block is super opaque, but totally transparent wet.

  • My favorite paint brushes to use with these are taklon bristle filberts, liner brushes, rounds and flats.

  • Mix your ink mixture in a cheap acrylic painting palette

  • When your premixed areas on the palette dry up, you can reactivate them by adding water

  • Colors can be muted by adding their complimentary color. While they may seem too bright by themselves, they mix and layer very well for any color palette.

Cons:

They are not lightfast when wet (and there are some that aren’t when dry).

Available in sets of 6, 12, 24, 36, and 72

And available in open stock in fine art stores.

Prices:

Around $100 USD for the set of 72 pencils

And around $80 USD for the full set of blocks

A small set of 12 blocks will run around $6.28 and are great to get started with.

037 Starting Your YouTube Channel

Topic:  Starting Your YouTube Channel

This week John and Lisa answer another question you submitted to us about how to start your YouTube channel.

Here are some of the topics and questions we discuss:

Come up with a message statement.  What is the goal of your channel.  Know why you are creating the channel.

Who is your target audience?  Speak to that person as you look at the camera.

Do you need an avatar or should you use a picture of yourself?

What should you put in your banner?

How much attention should you pay to preparing your playlists?

Should you adhere to a consistent schedule?

Is there a right way to share?  And how much should I share?

Should you do collaborations, and if so, how do you choose who you do a collaboration with?

Should I sign up for one of the “growing your channel” networks when they reach out to me?

Should you subscribe to video creators?

We also discuss consideration for:

  1. Your camera set up

  2. The room you record in

  3. Camera or mic stand vs a tripod

  4. Lighting

What software should you use:

Lisa uses PowerDirector 12

John has started using Premiere Pro

What are the pros and cons to editing:

Workflow considerations

Batching topics and work tasks together to be less overwhelmed

032 Deep Dive Into Polychromos

Topic:  Deep Dive Into Polychromos

This week Lisa and I talk about one of our favorite colored pencils, Polychromos by Faber-Castell

With a name like Polychromos where the name means “many colors”, the pencils are some of the best on the market today.  This pencil line has been around for over 100 years.

The pencil is an oil based, hard lead, break resistant, water-proof and non-smudging.  The pencil is slightly thicker than Prismacolor Premier and the lightfast rating is signified right on the barrel of the pencil.

They come in sets of 12, 24, 36, 60 and 120.

030 Dealing with Negativity

Topic:  Dealing with Negativity

This week John and Lisa talk about how you should deal with trolls and negativity when you encounter it.

Some things to consider are:

  1. Be prepared mentally.  If you’re online, then chances are you will encounter negativity.

  2. By engaging in dialogue with a negative commenter, you are actually giving the commenter what they want.  Just block them, ignore, and move on with your day.

  3. If you are emotionally affected, then vent to a close friend.

We talk about such things like venue, what to charge, how to take payments, and what to expect at your first class.

There is nothing to be intimidated about.  If you are at all interested in teaching and sharing what you’ve learned in art then take the plunge and at least ask.  The worst that could happen is you get a “no”.

024 Color vs Value and Contrast

Color vs contrast.jpg

Topic:  Color versus Value and Contrast

Points of Interest:
Define Color: (Hue) are basic colors that make up the rainbow.  They represent light wavelengths.  In a way, color is defined as hue, saturation and tonal value.

Define Value: Graduations of light and dark.  All colors have an inherent value.

Define Contrast: Difference in light and dark.  Or light vs dark.

Saturation or the Chroma has to do with the intensity of the hue.

What is the grisaille method?

023 Should I Be Blogging.jpg

Topic: Should I Be Blogging

Should every artist be blogging?

What are some topics that would be suitable for an artist to blog about?

Here are some general topic ideas:

  1. WIP

  2. Art tips - How you execute your particular style of drawing.

  3. Future plans - What events and shows do you have coming up?

Lisa and I discussed how to get started if you’ve not been blogging and want to start.
